Look for quality

Both the anus and rectum have a delicate lining that can be easily torn or damaged, so whatever you put up there must have no rough edges, no sharp, pointed parts and is made from a solid, washable material. Make sure your anal sex toy has all these qualities so that you can play safely in the knowledge you are not going to get scratched or injured or find that the toy breaks half way through your session.

Look at the material

When investing in an anal sex toy it pays to be fussy about the material from which it is made. You must be able to sterilize the anal sex toy after each use after use. That’s because there is always going to be potentially harmful bacteria on your anal sex toys after play. You need to disinfect them after each use and to do that you a material that can withstand boiling. Look for stainless steel, tempered glass, stone and silicone. Avoid jelly as it will not be possible to boil and it will retain the bacteria.

Look at the design

When you put an anal sex toy inside you have to be sure it doesn’t become lodged up there. It can and does happen! The anal sex toy should have a flared base so that it cannot be fully inserted. Also, toys with a vibrator can become stuck in the on position, and the motor can overheat. Make sure your anal sex toys have a base or a good solid handle.

Look for the lube

No anal sex toy can be used without water based anal lube. The anus produces no lubrication of its own so you need to keep the toy nice and slippery throughout the session. Some anal lubes can help you to relax the sphincter muscles to help make insertion easier and more pleasurable. Never attempt to use an anal sex toy without lube. It’s uncomfortable and potentially dangerous as you run the risk of the toy getting stuck inside you.

About the author

Hi, I’m Joseph O’Connor. I am a twenty-six year old man from Texas, USA. I fell into writing about sex toys when I was looking for a way to both try new things and explore my body… Things progressed rapidly. It turns out there aren’t many (straight) men that can talk about sex the way I do without getting downright ridiculous. I’m always reading more/learning about the human body and sexual response and always looking for ways to improve my sex life (and that of those I come in contact with)
